OUR STORY
It was founded by award-winning chef Christian Nordkvist and his partner Henrik Søndergaard, who share a passion for food, wine and hospitality.
The Ugly Duckling is not just a name, it’s a story. A story of passion, perseverance, and transformation.
It all began in 2013 when we, Christian and Henrik, decided to open, our restaurant in Corralejo, Fuerteventura.
We had a vision of creating a Scandinavian-inspired cuisine that would delight the palates of locals and tourists alike.
In the old town of Corralejo, we found a small, cosy space not far from the harbour.
We decided to call it The Ugly Duckling, after the famous fairytale by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen.
From when we opened in November 2013, we were dedicated to using the best and freshest ingredients we were able to source.
People loved our food, service, and ambience. We soon became one of the most popular and acclaimed restaurants in Corralejo, attracting customers from all over the island and the World. We received rave reviews from critics and customers alike and within months, we were ranked as the best restaurant in Fuerteventura on TripAdvisor.com – the world’s largest travel guide based on real persons own experiences.

We have every year been awarded a TripAdvisor certificate of excellence for consistent good reviews.
Based on our initial success, we decided to buy our own premises, which we opened for the public in November 2016.
We were so pleased with the move, and it was a great help when we had to survive through the Covid pandemic.
Restaurant Guru ranked us as the Best Restaurant in Corralejo in 2021 and 2022.
And most impressively TripAdvisor ranked us as Best Restaurant for a date night in their Travelers Choice, Best of the Best awards in all of Spain 2022 and number 7 in the world in the same category.
This was a huge honour and a validation of our hard work and passion.
